This is a story about a cricket match. It is also a story about a father watching his son play for the first time, about a boy learning that failure is not the opposite of grace, and about the long afternoon light that falls across an oval field and makes everything look, briefly, sacred.

Forty-two overs is two hundred and fifty-two deliveries. Two hundred and fifty-two opportunities. Two hundred and fifty-two small endings.
